Mercurio builds cogeneration plant for AquafilSLO with E.ON ESCo services

Mercurio takes care of the complete realization of the cogeneration plant to face the energy challenges.

Launched at the beginning of October 2024 theCogeneration plant (CHP) to power Aquafil's plants in Ljubljana, Slovenia, thanks to the synergy of:

  • AquafilSLO, part of the Aquafil Group, one of the leading producers of Nylon 6, E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) in Slovenia, based in Ljubljana
  • part of the E.ON SE Group, one of the largest operators of energy networks and infrastructure in Europe
  • Mercurio Italian engineering company and EPC contractor

This new CHP plant, with a 7.5 MW Kawasaki GPB80D turbine, will generate 59 GWh/year of electricity and 220,000 tonnes/year of steam at 10 bar, covering 100% of steam demand (>200,000 t/year) and approximately 50% of electricity (59 GWh/year) on the site.

Aquafil's sustainable strategy in Slovenia

Dedicated to contributing to a healthier planet for future generations, Aquafil follows a rigorous sustainability strategy for its production and its products.
The production plant in Ljubljana, where the iconic ECONYL® regenerated nylon is produced from waste, is one of the company's main sites.
For its processes, it consumes significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy. Committed to ensuring a sustainable future for the site, Aquafil has decided to implement a highly efficient power plant locally that also reuses cogenerated heat for its production processes.

Mercurio Srl for AquafilSLO

Mercurio Srl was responsible for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the new plant built for AquafilSLO in Ljubljana.
Mercury is official partner of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, leader in the energy sector and with patents also in the hydrogen sector.

“It was challenging and interesting for us to work for AquafilSLO and E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) in Slovenia on this high-performance project.
The delivered plant represents the state of the art in terms of efficiency and reliability. The main component is our M7A-03D gas turbine (GPB80D package) with the best efficiency, ready to burn hydrogen, and with the lowest level of atmospheric emissions currently available. We have used all our expertise in terms of design, operation and construction capacity for this work. We are confident that this little “jewel” will provide stable, efficient and clean energy to AquafilSLO for the coming years”, he said Maurizio Domenichini, Project Manager of Mercurio.

“The AquafilSLO plant in Ljubljana hosts some of the most advanced technologies, which enable the Aquafil group to be a excellent example of circular economy and an innovator in the synthetic materials industry. Given the current context of the energy market, characterized by rising prices and insecurity of supply, we have opted for a solution that strengthens our energy independence. By installing a central cogeneration plant to power our industrial processes in Ljubljana, with electricity and heat generated on site, Aquafil not only underlines its commitment to Slovenia, but also ensures a secure local supply from a highly efficient production unit”, said Denis Jahic, General Manager of AquafilSLO.

“In light of current events, the focus is even greater on energy efficiency and independence to avoid energy price volatility. The transformation towards climate neutrality requires smart, future-proof, decentralized, sustainable and efficient solutions, and our Energy Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) provide all of this. Following the already successful cooperation between E.ON and Aquafil in the Italian market, we are very pleased that Aquafil has once again recognized us as an experienced and valuable energy partner to further drive their business goals,” said Andreas Rörig, CEO of the E.ON Hrvatska Group.
